Restoration can mean different things to different people.
It could mean a total rebuild as a complete project with no expense spared, or a series of substantial coordinated repairs over a couple of seasons while the boat is in commission. Many boats can be rejuvenated with the sympathetic use of traditional skills and materials of the original period, along with the use of modern technology where it is appropriate.
Restoration can often be an alternative to building new, especially if you have found a hull of a particular historical provenance. Usually, in my experience, boats have been owned by a family for a couple of generations or more and the time has come to restore an unseaworthy hulk into the sea-going pride and joy it once was; this keeps all the emotions and memories alive in the original boat as opposed to building a replica.
If you acquire a distressed craft with an interesting heritage, or have simply found an ageing boat that you have fallen in love with, I can help you do the minimum to get afloat or carry out a complete restoration to the highest standards.
I am currently restoring a 28' yawl for a client, which was built in 1936. Jobs include:- new teak deck, new deck beams, hull planking repairs, new frames, restored coach roof, new keel bolts etc.
